ARSHAWN

TENNESSEE| SERIES # 4

Hi, my name is Arshawn McFarland. My gender is male, and my pronouns are him and his. Growing up in Memphis is really tough, especially when you're not from here. I barely know my way around, but have still been having a good time. I originally came to the city to learn more about its’ history; I wanted to visit historical places. Being in the LGBT community here is a struggle. We always get criticized, and have to overlook a lot of it to focus on what makes us happy. We strive to be better, and to let nobody bring us down.

I discovered OUTMemphis a month ago through a close friend. Coming here was a difficult step for me, because I wasn't sure what to expect. I ended up really enjoying it; it was filled with respectful, loving, kind people. All of my questions were answered, and I was welcomed into loving arms.  If you are in the LGBT Community, the center is willing to help you with anything you may need. .After I discovered OUTMemphis, my life has been easier. They are honest, tell me what I need to know, and give me the tools to do better in life. The center has taught me a lot about HIV prevention. I didn’t know how quickly it can spread. Thanks to them, I was able to get on PrEP. HIV is something that we can help stop if we all put our minds to it. If you’re reading this… let’s come together as one and stop HIV!!!
I have a community at OUTMemphis. They’ve also helped me find jobs and housing. When I’m there, I’m reminded that it doesn't matter what I’ve been through. They remind me that we are all human, and I don’t have to move forward alone. When you first walk through the doors to the center, you’ll know you made the right decision. To my younger self: You are doing very good! With all the information I have now, I promise you’re on the right path!
